Monday, She Was Back on the Stretch
In her story, Olwen spent three years in Cardiff and came back to the valley the winter Emrys, her teacher, could no longer manage the hill. She didn't announce it or negotiate it with anyone: Monday, she was back on the stretch, stakes ready and an old Land Rover just bought off a scrapyard man in Rhayader. Nobody asked. You could tell who was laying now because the cuts ran lower. She's a hare who picks up her own load and gets on with it, no ceremony.
