Olwen.

Matte poster

In this hare poster, Olwen looks you straight in the eye and doesn't look away. She wears a mustard turtleneck, a plum herringbone vest and a headband in the same tone that gathers her ears back. She's a calm hare, the kind who takes her time.

The real species

European hare.

Lepus europaeus

A well-laid hedge holds for thirty winters. Hurry doesn't hold for one.

Open fields, grasslands and farmland of continental Europe and Great Britain, almost always bordered by hedges, field boundaries and small copses it uses as daytime cover. It also adapts to moorland, salt marshes, airfields and mountain areas up to 2,800 meters in altitude.

The face that sizes you up before answering

What you see is a calm hare in a mustard turtleneck and a plum headband, looking straight ahead. No gestures. That restraint is what I was chasing when I created her: the sense that an answer is forming and hasn't come out yet.

In her story, Olwen answers after a pause, as if the question had to cross the whole field before reaching her. And what she says, once it comes, doesn't move from there. The print holds that instant just before: the polite silence of someone who doesn't talk to fill space.

Still, deciding whether to run

A hare has no burrow to slip into. She settles into a form she flattens in the cold grass, out in the open, and trusts in seeing before hiding. That's where that tense stillness comes from. The stillness of someone who watches everything and hasn't yet decided whether to run.

That's Olwen's pulse and, with her, this print's. Animal Kinhood is the series I've spent years portraying dressed animals in, with ordinary people's lives, and Olwen is one of its quietest pieces. If you'd rather hang her ready to go, there's the framed version; and there's more of her in her story.
