First listen, then listen again
Isabella started as an assistant at Klokhuis, a studio in the Patershol quarter of Ghent. Her mentor, Willem, gave her the rule that still orders her from within: "Don't fix what you don't understand. First listen. Then listen again. Then decide." She doesn't recite it; she wears it. When Klokhuis closed and Willem left for Amsterdam, she recorded the silence of the empty place, four minutes and thirty-three seconds, and wrote him a thank-you message he never answered. She hasn't deleted it. Framing a portrait is a little like that: putting a border around what you choose to keep.
