Matte poster (unframed)

This matte poster of Fernando is an unframed art print that arrives rolled, ready for you to choose how to hang it. The first thing you see is the black vinyl jacket, open, shiny under the portrait's light. And at the neck, a steel chain with irregular links — forged by himself one Sunday with no orders on, on the same forge he uses to make four-meter gates.

Fernando is an Iberian bull, thirty-six years old. He lives in Trujillo, Extremadura. He stands six foot three, has the shoulders of someone who's spent eighteen years lifting hot iron, and enormous hands with permanent calluses. He moves slowly, with steps that make the floor aware of him. The people in his village say he's reliable, that if he says no it means no, and that if he fixes something he won't overcharge you.

Iberian bull.

Bos taurus

Five hundred years of dehesa fit inside me. Things well made last longer than the people who made them.

Dehesas of the Iberian Peninsula: expanses of holm oak and cork oak with natural pasture in Extremadura, Salamanca, Andalusia and the Portuguese Alentejo. Density of 0.2 to 0.5 head per hectare.

Presence of the oak scrubland

What the portrait captures is that dense calm of someone who needs his own space and silence to function. The look is direct, serene, effortless. Fernando says little — deep voice, short sentences — and that comes through in how he holds the pose: no tension, no attempt to impress anyone. There's something in the vertical line of the horns and the width of the shoulders that conveys weight, but a quiet weight. The weight of someone who knows where he is.

He bought the jacket at a secondhand shop in Cáceres at twenty-three. It was the first thing he chose just to look good — going-out clothes, which in his vocabulary is a minimal category. Thirteen years later, it still fits. That says something about how he chooses things: slowly, with no going back. The portrait catches him in that jacket with his chest bare underneath, which is how he usually wears it.

The jacket and the chain

The chain around the neck has the subtle irregularity of something made without hurry. Blacksmithing at a small scale. Fernando is an artisan blacksmith in Trujillo. He forges gates for oak-scrubland estates, ironwork for renovated farmhouses and agricultural tools no one makes anymore. The chain is the miniature demonstration of how he works: each link heated to the right temperature, bent by hand, closed with a clean strike. The same process as a four-meter gate, but at another scale.

His calling card for sixteen years has been the same phrase, said once by someone and repeated ever since: "If you want something in iron that isn't from a catalog, talk to the boy at the forge." The "boy" part no longer applies, but the phrase is still alive in Trujillo. And the work is still the same: pencil sketch on brown paper, three versions before lighting the forge, a "I'll let you know" when asked about timelines. If you take two days to send a quote, it's probably because you're really thinking about it.

The portrait shows all of that. The developed horns, the jet-black coat, the width of the shoulders — and at the same time, a stillness that comes from knowing where you are and having no intention of moving. Fernando needs to walk through the oak scrubland at least three times a week. Scattered holm oaks, pastureland, dry-stone walls, the smell of wild rosemary. When the pressure builds, he pulls on his boots and walks without direction toward the Sierra de Santa Cruz. Eight or ten kilometers. No phone.
