Mug

Yara's mug is made of glossy white ceramic, 11 ounces (325 milliliters), with a rounded handle just the right size for three fingers. The portrait of the black caiman —the cream jacket, the thin gold chain at the neck— sits on the outer face.

The wall is thick enough to keep coffee warm through a whole breakfast. Made on demand: it's produced when you order it.

Melanosuchus niger

The silence before the pulse is what matters.

The entire Amazon basin (Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, Guyana, Suriname, Venezuela, French Guiana), the Orinoco basin and the Pantanal wetlands. It inhabits slow waters, lakes, várzea (seasonal floodplain), and both blackwater and whitewater.

Ceramic, 325 milliliters

The mug is made of glossy white ceramic, 11 imperial ounces (325 milliliters), with a rounded handle sized so three fingers fit without pinching and the little finger rests underneath. The outside is clean white, no texture, no excessive shine. The inside is different: a uniform golden yellow, a warm tone you see every time you lift the mug, one that shifts the visual temperature of the coffee before the coffee reaches your tongue. The portrait of Yara — an adult Amazonian black caiman, ivory-cream bomber jacket open, white ribbed-knit sweater — is printed on the outer wall by thermal sublimation: the dye fuses with the ceramic during firing and won't peel or crack.

Dishwasher-safe at normal temperature and microwave-safe. The white exterior and yellow interior isn't an aesthetic whim. The golden inside matches almost exactly the warm tones in Yara's portrait, where the bomber's zipper, the two rings on her lower jaw, and the thin chain at her neck all carry matte gold. The mug was made this way and the portrait was conceived this way separately. They coincide. That's a fact, not a metaphor.

Coffee with condensed milk

Yara has a routine that repeats seven days a week. Half past seven in the morning, before the studio below opens its shutters, she climbs the three steps to the first-floor apartment and makes her first coffee of the day. Hot water, a heaped spoonful of ground coffee, a long pour of condensed milk. The condensed milk isn't a sweet indulgence: it's the emotional regulator of the house, the thing that softens the morning while the heat hasn't started yet and the kitchen is cool from the air conditioning left running all night.

She drinks the coffee without rushing, sitting by the window that looks onto the inner courtyard, shutters still down. That first hour is the only one in the day when she doesn't work, doesn't call, doesn't answer client messages. On the kitchen windowsill, on the ledge, there's a small altar with a lit yellow candle and a shell from the Rio Negro. The golden yellow interior of the mug, seen from above while drinking, rhymes with that candle. The coffee goes down slowly. The house is quiet.

There's one way to know the routine is old: it goes back to 2020, when the pandemic dropped the studio's income to zero for six months and her mother Nilza started sending, from the Coroado neighborhood, plastic trays of braised tucunaré with manioc flour every Sunday morning. In those months Yara learned to make one meal a day enough and to let the morning coffee take up space. Since then, even with a healthy account, the ritual holds. The tray still arrives. So does the mug.
