Matte poster (unframed)

Ikal's matte poster, an axolotl from Xochimilco, is an unframed print with a matte, glare-free finish. It arrives rolled, ready to hang however you like. The portrait —pink skin, reactive gills, the red plaid flannel shirt over the blue denim trucker— sits on the paper with no shine to distract.

It's a print for a wall you look at up close. The matte finish kills the window's reflections and leaves the color of the animal and the clothing with no competition. Printed on demand: it's made when you order it.

Axolotl.

Ambystoma mexicanum

Working the chinampa means caring for the water where the last axolotl lives.

Endemic exclusively to the canals and chinampas of the Xochimilco lake system, in Mexico City, at 2,240 metres of altitude. It inhabits the muddy beds of cold fresh water (between 6 and 20 °C), among aquatic vegetation such as ahuejote and water lily, in low-current zones. Its historic habitat also included the now-extinct lakes of Chalco and Texcoco.

Paper skin

This matte poster of Ikal brings the axolotl's pale pink skin, the feathery red gills behind its head, and the flannel shirt it wears to paper. It's a fine art print on 305 g/m² Hahnemühle paper, matte finish, unframed. It arrives rolled in a rigid tube, ready to frame in whatever format you choose.

Matte paper doesn't compete with the portrait. It doesn't shine. It doesn't catch the lamp light or demand a particular angle to look good. What it does is absorb the light and return it softly, so the pale pink of Ikal's skin reads the same up close and from three meters away. The gills keep their saturated color without the background turning into a mirror. If you'd rather skip the framing step, there's also a [framed version of Ikal with a mount](https://www.yagopartal.com/animal-kinhood/ikal/).

What you'll see on the wall

A young axolotl with wide hands, narrow shoulders, and a red plaid flannel shirt open over a plain undershirt. The gills are relaxed back, the way they are when the animal is calm; in axolotls they work as a visible state indicator — they bristle when there's alarm, relax when comfortable, and tremble, say those who know them well, when there's something like excitement. Here they're at rest, which gives the whole piece a stillness you notice when you walk into the room.

The red flannel isn't random. It has a private conversation with the gills — two reds with different temperatures: the organic red of the external gills and the worn red of the plaid cotton. In Ikal's story, that shirt was inherited from an uncle who moved to Monterrey ten years ago and left a drawer of folded clothes on top of the grandmother's dresser. The uncle had bought it at a flea market in California in the nineties. The portrait is designed so that the quiet rhyme between the two reds charges the picture without you having to explain it. The Hahnemühle paper adds grain, and that grain reads in the smooth areas of the skin as if the amphibian were made of an organic substance that can't quite decide between dry and wet.
