Did you know...

1.

This species of tamarin is named like this for its resemblance with the German emperor Wilhelm II. It started as a joke, but it ended up becoming the official name.

2.

They live in trees, jumping from branch to branch. They are diurnal, very small and really agile.

3.

The Emperor tamarin is grey, with black hands and feet and a brown tail, but its main characteristic is its long white moustache, that both males and females have, which extends beyond the shoulders.

4.

They live in troops which have between 2 and 8 members, led by the eldest female, and with a higher number of males.

5.

Among its main predators are wild cats, dogs, snakes and birds of prey.

6.

A female can give birth to one or two babies per litter. Males groom and carry infants more often than females do.

7.

This species has two subspecies more, but only one has white moustache.

8.

Because of its light weight, this animal can reach food located at the end of branches, which are not accesible to other animals.

9.

Infants are breastfed until they are 3 months old, when they become active members of the troop.

10.

They are very active and sociable animals. They love to be stroked and to play with each other.

11.

Although its tail is quite long, it is not prehensile.

12.

Two thirds of the females see three colors, which makes it easier for them to detect ripe fruit in trees. The rest of the females and males only see two colors. This helps them detect camouflaged predators.
